Kitakyushu-city biodiversity(2012-)

≪Back

It is an important problem in an urban area to regenerate and create the remnant natural space such as a green space and a river while maintaining biodiversity. But, in the present situation, it is too difficult in an urban area in Japan to do experience-based learning and the play that anyone was able to ever experience in decreasing natural environments due to the land development. On the other hand, environmental education is performed positively in Europe (Nordic countries, Germany etc.). In these countries, the environmental education is not carried out only between people concerned with education but is promoted by various NGOs and schools engaged in the environmental movement. In the recent study, for example, in Norway, the importance of placing the open space around the local elementary school as a place of a playground is discussed, the environmental education for the children (Fjortoft et al,2000).

After the Mayor’s Conference on Biodiversity (2007) was held in Curitiba, Brazil, the ninth meeting of the Conference of the Parties was held in Bonn, Germany, 2008, the tenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties was held in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, Japan, 2010, biodiversity become a highly concerned globally issue. Urban biodiversity has been lost due to the fragmentation of green spaces and open spaces, so a method and strategy for the maintenance has been being searched. Especially, in field of urban ecology, landscape ecology and conservation ecology, elucidation of the mechanism of maintenance of biodiversity is advancing gradually. For example, in Germany, the importance of urban biodiversity and a method of maintenance and design are discussed.

Discussing from a local ecosystem integrity standpoint, various projects for nature restoration are planned in Japan but these plans often have some problems: the open limited area due to excess consideration for ecosystem restoring, a place where ecosystem was destroyed by foreign species. These problems are considered the results that enough discussions over local ecosystem were not done.

From such a background, this project suggests the directions towards inflection of the city park with a Kitakyushu municipal government. Eventually, this research result will establish the idea that implementing the symbiosis model between humans and creatures who aim to join activities for embodiment.
